STRENGTH

I wanted to talk about strength—because it’s so much more than just lifting heavy weights.

Strength looks different depending on the demands of your body. Think about Geoff Capes, the strongman: his strength is raw power, built for lifting and moving massive weights. But compare that to Darcey Bussell, the legendary ballerina. Her strength lies in control, grace, and balance; she has incredible core strength and flexibility to lift her own body weight with precision and fluidity.

Then there’s Paula Radcliffe, the marathon runner, whose strength is in endurance. She isn’t lifting heavy but has built resilience in her muscles and cardiovascular system to keep her going at high speeds for hours. And Denise Lewis, the heptathlete, has a unique strength too—she needs power for jumps, speed for sprints, and endurance for long events, all requiring a balance of strength, speed, and stamina.

Each of these athletes is strong, but in ways that reflect their specific needs. You don’t need to lift heavy to be strong! In Pilates, we’re building a similar functional strength: strength that supports balance, flexibility, endurance, and control. It’s about what your body can do, how efficiently it moves, and how strong it feels—qualities that we cultivate through mindful, intentional movement.

See you next week! 💪💪💪
